Tips to select the best keywords for iOS and Android Apps.

Keyword analysis and selecting the best keywords is the critical step of App store optimization. We should include the most important keywords in Title, subtitle/short description, keyword field and long description. So let’s see each step of keyword selection.

  1. Keyword Research
  2. Keyword Priority
  3. Target
  4. Monitor

Keyword Research

This is the most crucial and important step in ASO. Invest more time in it as the overall result depends on it. Prepare an elaborate keyword list giving priority to the relevant keywords. It can be a big list including long and related keywords. You can use different tools for this. Analyze traffic, competitor’s leading keywords, words that are connected to the features, etc., keywords in reviews, etc. The list may long up to a few hundred.

Keyword Priority

Next is the elimination round where we review the keyword list thoroughly and select the best we need. Check the list for its relevance, search volume, and ranking difficulty. For this purpose, we can use Apptweak as an effective tool.

Relevant keywords: Keywords that are closely related to describe the app’s functionality. Those words are most likely to be used by users searching for your kind of app. Using those words on meta and description increases the conversion rate and ranking.

Search Volume: We must have an idea about what the world searches for. We should select relevant keywords accordingly. If we use keywords that nobody uses, the whole purpose is a waste!

Ranking Difficulty and chance: We selected relevant keywords with good search volume. The story never ends here because words with high volume are always difficult to rank! Because the competition is very high. You should select high-volume keywords that you have a chance to rank on.

Target Keywords

What you have now is a list of relevant, high volume, low competition keywords. The next step is to add these keywords carefully into metadata. Arrange them in a manner that the title gets the top priority keywords. It has the highest ranking algorithm and impacts on traffic. This rule is the same for both App Store and Google Play. Try to add the most important keywords in the first few lines of your Android app’s long description. It will have strong visibility on Google Play. But this is not applicable for App Store descriptions. Keywords in the long description do not rank in App Store.

Apptweak will help you to optimize your metadata worksheet. Its features are:

Character count: It tells your character limit. Use the maximum character count with your targeted keyword.

Monitor the optimization

Keyword optimization requires constant attention. Keep your metadata for at least three-four weeks for stabilizing. After that review and assess the changes and update accordingly. It needs continuous updating, testing, and iterating.  The ranking algorithm is different for both stores.

In Google Play, changes may not be visible for weeks and take time to pick up.

In App Store, changes may happen in magical seconds and stay there for a few weeks. As the algorithm tests it for different keywords, it may affect the rankings too.

These 4 steps will help your apps grow  and generate millions of downloads in long term.
